She Married a Sterile Mafia Boss for One Year—Then the Doctor Said She Was Pregnant
Chapter 4
Their marriage slowly became less like a contract.
Not because either of them admitted it.
Because neither noticed when it happened.
Adrian began eating breakfast with her.
At first, he sat across the table and read messages on his phone.
Then he started asking questions.
“How was your brother?”
“Better.”
“His surgery?”
“Next month.”
“I’ll have my doctor review his case.”
“I can handle it.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because I want to.”
That answer bothered her.
Adrian wasn’t supposed to want anything.
He was supposed to fulfill the agreement and disappear.
Instead, he remembered how she liked her tea.
He noticed when she was tired.
He started coming home earlier.
One evening, Isabella found him sitting in the library.
He was staring at an old photograph.
“Who is that?”
“My mother.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“She was beautiful.”
“She died when I was twelve.”
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian nodded.
“She wanted another child.”
Isabella looked at him.
“What happened?”
“My father refused.”
“Why?”
“He believed an heir would make the family vulnerable.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He eventually had me tested.”
Isabella hesitated.
“And?”
“I was told I was infertile.”
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
His answer was immediate.
Isabella sat beside him.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Don’t be.”
“Still.”
He stared at the photograph.
“For years, I thought it was a blessing.”
“Why?”
“No one could use a child against me.”
Isabella’s heart tightened.
“That sounds lonely.”
“It was.”
She reached for his hand.
He looked down.
Neither moved.
Then Adrian turned his hand over and intertwined his fingers with hers.
That was the first time Isabella realized she had already broken the most important rule of their marriage.
She was no longer pretending.
She was falling in love.
