She Married a Sterile Mafia Boss for One Year—Then the Doctor Said She Was Pregnant
Chapter 7
The question hurt more than she expected.
Adrian saw it immediately.
His expression changed.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You did.”
“Isabella.”
“You asked whose child it is.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I don’t know what to think.”
“I know exactly what you’re thinking.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“Neither was the question.”
She turned away.
Adrian followed.
“I was told I couldn’t have children.”
“And I was told I couldn’t be pregnant.”
He stopped.
She turned back.
“So perhaps both of us were lied to.”
That sentence silenced him.
Adrian looked at the ultrasound again.
“Did you sleep with anyone else?”
“No.”
He closed his eyes.
“I believe you.”
“Then why ask?”
“Because I’ve spent my entire life being betrayed.”
Isabella’s anger softened slightly.
Adrian sat down.
“My father arranged the tests.”
“What if they were wrong?”
“They weren’t.”
“What if they were?”
He looked at her.
She sat beside him.
“I don’t know what happened.”
“Neither do I.”
For the first time since she had known him, Adrian looked genuinely frightened.
Not of enemies.
Not of death.
Of hope.
“What if it’s mine?”
Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then?”
He looked at her stomach.
“Then everything changes.”
She placed the ultrasound photograph on the table.
“Yes.”
Adrian reached for her hand.
“I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
“I know.”
“And the baby.”
She looked at him.
“You already called it the baby.”
His lips trembled into the smallest smile.
“I suppose I did.”
