In College Her Friends Mocked His Torn Clothes… 5 Years Later He Became a Millionaire—and Their Boss
Chapter 1
Why did the girl who once laughed at his torn jacket suddenly stop smiling when he walked into the boardroom?
Five years earlier, Daniel Reed had stood outside a university lecture hall wearing the only jacket he owned.
The left sleeve had been repaired twice.
One button was missing.
The cuffs were faded from years of washing.
He knew what people saw when they looked at him.
Poor.
Unimportant.
Someone who didn’t belong.
But Daniel had learned not to explain himself.
He simply adjusted the strap of his worn backpack and walked into class.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
Sophia Bennett stood near the entrance with three friends.
She was wearing a designer coat and holding a coffee that probably cost more than Daniel spent on lunch.
Her friends looked him over.
One of them laughed.
“Did you get that jacket from a charity shop?”
Another covered her mouth.
Sophia smiled.
Not cruelly at first.
More like she was embarrassed that he had been standing near them.
Daniel looked down at his sleeve.
“It still works.”
The girls laughed.
Daniel walked past them.
He didn’t know that Sophia would remember that sentence for years.
He didn’t know that one day she would sit across from him at a conference table.
And he certainly didn’t know that by then, the company where she worked would belong partly to the man everyone had laughed at.
