“Who Taught Her to Walk” — Billionaire Stunned as Her Girl Pointed to Her Single Dad Ex-SEAL Janitor

Chapter 1

The little girl wasn’t supposed to know him.

That was what frightened Evelyn Sterling most.

She stood in the middle of the children’s hospital lobby holding her three-year-old daughter’s hand when Emma suddenly stopped.

The child stared across the room.

Then she let go of her mother’s fingers.

“Emma?”

The little girl took one step.

Then another.

And pointed toward a man in a faded maintenance uniform.

Evelyn followed her daughter’s finger.

Her stomach tightened.

The man was pushing a cleaning cart near the elevators.

He was tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Quiet.

His dark hair was cut short, and a faint scar ran from his temple toward his jaw.

His name tag read:

Daniel Brooks — Facilities.

Evelyn had never met him.

At least, she didn’t think she had.

“Sweetheart,” she said gently. “Do you know that man?”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

Evelyn froze.

“How?”

Emma pointed again.

“He taught me.”

“Taught you what?”

The little girl smiled.

“Walk.”

Evelyn’s face went white.

“What did you say?”

Emma smiled wider.

“Uncle Daniel taught me walk.”

Daniel had stopped moving.

He looked across the lobby.

Their eyes met.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Emma ran toward him.

“Daniel!”

The man dropped his cleaning cloth and crouched.

Emma threw herself into his arms.

Daniel hugged her as if he had been waiting years.

Evelyn rushed over.

“What is happening?”

Daniel stood slowly.

Emma remained in his arms.

“Hi, Emma.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“How does my daughter know you?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t think you’d ever find out.”

That answer made Evelyn’s heart pound.

“Find out what?”

Daniel lowered Emma.

She immediately took his hand.

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

Then at Daniel.

“Who are you?”

He hesitated.

“Daniel Brooks.”

“I know your name.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I mean to my daughter.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I used to help take care of her.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“What?”

“Before she came home to you.”

“My daughter was never away from me.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Not that way.”

“Then explain.”

Before he could answer, Emma pointed toward his chest.

“Tell Mommy.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he said quietly,

“I was there the night she was born.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“How?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because your husband asked me to be.”

She stared.

“My husband?”

Thomas Sterling had been dead for eleven months.

He had left behind a daughter, a billion-dollar empire, and more unanswered questions than Evelyn could count.

Now a janitor was claiming her late husband had personally asked him to protect Emma.

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“What did Thomas know about you?”

Daniel looked around the lobby.

“Not here.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Then where?”

Daniel glanced at Emma.

“Somewhere your security can’t hear us.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You know about my security?”

“I used to be one of the people who trained them.”

She froze.

“You were military.”

“Yes.”

“What branch?”

Daniel said nothing for a moment.

Then:

“SEALs.”

Evelyn stared.

Her daughter reached for his hand again.

“Daniel good.”

Evelyn looked at the little girl.

She had never seen Emma trust a stranger that quickly.

Never.

Then Daniel said something that made Evelyn’s entire world shift.

“Your husband didn’t hire me to clean the hospital.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“He hired me to keep your daughter alive.”
