Richard refused to answer.
Emma confronted him in his office.
“My mother knew Nathan.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“She knew Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Your mother believed the Carter family deserved justice.”
Emma felt as though the floor had shifted beneath her.
“Justice for what?”
“The original company.”
Richard walked toward the window.
“Your grandfather took control of Nathan’s shares.”
“Because Nathan was corrupt.”
“That was the story.”
Emma froze.
“What does that mean?”
Richard turned around.
“Your grandfather wasn’t innocent.”
Emma stared at him.
“He manipulated the investigation.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted control.”
Emma felt sick.
“So Nathan was telling the truth?”
“Partly.”
“What part?”
Richard lowered his voice.
“Nathan had committed crimes.”
“But?”
“Your grandfather used those crimes as an excuse to take everything.”
Emma sat down.
Her entire family history was collapsing.
“What did my mother want?”
Richard hesitated.
“She wanted the truth exposed.”
“Then why didn’t she?”
“She died.”
Emma stared at him.
“Was her death an accident?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Emma stood.
“Dad.”
Richard finally whispered:
“No.”
Emma’s heart stopped.
“What happened?”
Richard looked toward the door.
“Your mother was investigating Nathan, your grandfather, and me.”
“Why?”
“She found financial records.”
“And?”
“She was going to expose all of us.”
Emma’s voice trembled.
“Who killed her?”
Richard looked at his daughter.
“I don’t know.”
But Emma knew he was hiding something.
And suddenly, the mystery of her mother’s death was no longer a family tragedy.
It was evidence.
