Daniel came to Emma’s apartment the following evening.
She almost refused to let him inside.
But curiosity won.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
“You look terrible,” Emma said.
“I haven’t slept.”
“That’s not my problem.”
“I know.”
She stepped aside.
Daniel entered.
For a few seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
Emma laughed.
“You used my identity.”
“I was desperate.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to use me.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Emma’s eyes filled with anger.
“Then why are you here?”
“Because there’s something you don’t know.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You think I created everything.”
“You did.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Someone else was behind it.”
Emma froze.
“Nathan?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You know his name?”
“Yes.”
“Then you know too much.”
“Tell me.”
Daniel hesitated.
“He approached me before we got married.”
“Why?”
“He said your family had destroyed his.”
Emma stared at him.
“That makes no sense.”
“He showed me documents.”
“What documents?”
“Old financial agreements.”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“He said Sterling Holdings had been built using money that belonged to the Carter family.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“So you married me for revenge?”
Daniel shook his head.
“At first.”
Emma’s heart sank.
“At first?”
“I didn’t expect to love you.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“Then I did.”
Emma looked away.
“Don’t say that.”
“It’s true.”
“You still betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan threatened me.”
Emma looked at him.
“He said if I stopped, he would destroy you.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I thought I could control everything.”
Emma whispered:
“You couldn’t.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I lost you because I was trying to save you.”
Emma shook her head.
“You don’t get to call betrayal protection.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
He turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he said:
“Whatever happens next…”
He paused.
“Don’t trust anyone in your family.”
Then he walked away.
Emma stood frozen.
For the first time, she wondered whether Daniel had truly been the villain.
Or merely another victim.
