Emma stared at the document.

Nathan had received nothing.

Her father had never told her.
When Richard arrived, she confronted him.
“Did you steal the Carter family’s money?”
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
“That isn’t what happened.”
“Then tell me what happened.”
“Your grandfather made a deal.”
“With Nathan?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
Richard sat down.
“Your grandfather believed Nathan was involved in illegal financial activities.”
“So he took the company?”
“To protect the family.”
Emma shook her head.
“And Nathan?”
“He disappeared.”
Emma looked at him.
“Did you know he was alive?”
Richard’s silence was enough.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
Emma stared at her father.
“You let me marry Daniel knowing his family hated us.”
“I didn’t know Daniel was involved.”
“But you knew the danger.”
Richard looked devastated.
“I wanted to protect you.”
“You protected me by keeping me ignorant.”
Richard had no answer.
Then Emma’s phone rang.

“Emma, you need to see this.”
She met him at his office.
He showed her a surveillance photograph.

Alive.
Standing outside Daniel’s old office.
Taken two days earlier.
Emma stared at the image.
