The Billionaire Came for the Famous Curator—But Couldn’t Take His Eyes Off Her Quiet Sister

Chapter 1

The first thing Adrian Black noticed when he entered the Whitmore Gallery was not the priceless painting waiting beneath the chandelier.

It was the woman standing in the corner, holding a roll of blueprints against her chest as if she were trying to disappear behind them.

She wore a simple cream blouse, dark trousers, and no jewelry except a tiny silver watch. While everyone else in the gallery seemed determined to be noticed, she was carefully checking a loose frame near the service entrance.

Adrian had come to Chicago for one reason.

Isabelle Hart.

At thirty-one, Isabelle was America’s most celebrated young curator. She had turned obscure European collections into record-breaking exhibitions and had recently been chosen to curate the private collection Adrian’s foundation was preparing to unveil.

The project was worth nearly two hundred million dollars.

So Adrian expected confidence.

He expected glamour.

He expected someone accustomed to being watched.

Instead, he found Isabelle’s younger sister.

Lena Hart.

He didn’t know her name yet.

“Mr. Black?”

Adrian turned.

Isabelle approached in a black evening gown, smiling with the effortless confidence of someone who had spent years walking into rooms where everyone already knew her.

“Welcome to Chicago.”

“Thank you.”

She shook his hand.

Behind her, cameras flashed.

Adrian barely noticed.

His attention drifted toward the quiet woman near the service door.

She had crouched beside the frame and was examining something underneath it.

A security guard approached.

“Miss Hart, you shouldn’t be handling that.”

“I’m not handling the painting,” she said quietly. “I’m checking the bracket.”

The guard frowned.

“That’s maintenance’s job.”

“It becomes maintenance’s job after something breaks.”

Adrian heard the exchange.

Lena looked up.

For half a second, their eyes met.

She immediately looked away.

Something about that bothered him.

Not because she had ignored him.

Because she hadn’t seemed impressed by him.

Everyone knew Adrian Black.

At thirty-eight, he had inherited a modest investment company and turned it into Blackstone Meridian, a global empire spanning technology, real estate, logistics, and luxury hospitality.

People usually changed their posture when he entered a room.

Lena had simply gone back to the frame.

“That’s my sister,” Isabelle said.

Adrian looked at her.

“Lena?”

“Yes. My younger sister.”

“What does she do?”

Isabelle gave a small laugh.

“Everything nobody notices.”

Lena finally walked toward them.

“Isabelle, the west gallery frame needs to be closed for the evening.”

“Tonight?”

“The humidity changed.”

Isabelle sighed.

“Lena, tonight is the preview.”

“I know.”

“And the collectors are already here.”

“I know.”

“Then please don’t turn this into another crisis.”

Lena’s expression didn’t change.

“I’m not creating a crisis.”

She glanced toward the painting.

“I’m trying to prevent one.”

Adrian studied her.

“You think the humidity is dangerous?”

Lena looked at him.

“The painting is on a warped mounting plate. If the humidity rises another four percent, the frame could shift.”

“How do you know?”

She hesitated.

Then she pointed to a tiny brass sensor beneath the display.

“Because the sensor has been recording the change for twenty minutes.”

Adrian looked at the sensor.

Then at Isabelle.

Then back at Lena.

For the first time that evening, he smiled.

“Show me.”

Lena blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“The problem.”

Across the gallery, Isabelle’s smile disappeared.

She had spent three years becoming the woman Adrian Black had specifically come to meet.

Yet within five minutes of entering her world, the billionaire was following her quiet sister toward a painting.

And neither sister understood why.

Not yet.
