One trust belonged to Emma’s mother.
Emma stared at the records.
“My mother had access.”
Richard nodded.
“She did.”
“Then why did she never tell me?”
“Because she was afraid.”
“Of whom?”
Richard didn’t answer.
The investigators discovered one final transaction.
It had happened three days before Emma’s mother died.
A payment had been made to an unknown account.

Nathan Carter.
Emma confronted him.
This time, Nathan didn’t run.

“You paid my mother.”
“I protected her.”
“From what?”
“Your grandfather.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Why did she pay you?”
Nathan looked away.
“She asked me to help her disappear.”
Emma stared.
“Disappear?”
“She planned to leave.”
“Then why did she die?”
