Daniel returned two days later.
He didn’t come alone.
Victoria walked beside him.
Emma stared at them.
“You’re alive.”
Victoria nodded.
“Nathan let me go.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“He wants something.”
“What?”
“You.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
Daniel handed her a file.
Inside were photographs.
Her mother.
Nathan.
Her grandfather.
And Daniel.
Taken years before Emma met him.
Emma looked at him.
“You knew my mother?”
“No.”
“Then why are you in these photographs?”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not me.”
Emma looked closer.
The man looked like Daniel.
But older.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
She looked at Daniel.
“Who is he?”
Daniel whispered:
“My father.”
Emma stared at him.
She had never met Daniel’s father.
He had supposedly died when Daniel was a teenager.
Daniel continued.
“My father worked for Nathan.”
“Doing what?”
“Financial operations.”
Emma looked at the photograph again.
“Why did my mother meet him?”
“She was investigating your grandfather.”
Daniel sat down.
“My mother told me something before she died.”
“What?”
“She said your mother tried to expose the entire Sterling family.”
Emma felt her hands trembling.
“What did she find?”
Daniel looked at her.
“A secret account.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Emma stared.
“What’s inside?”
“Proof that your grandfather transferred Carter assets into Sterling Holdings.”
Emma closed the folder.
“And my mother?”
Daniel looked away.
“She knew.”
