Victoria waited until they were alone.
“Tell me the truth.”
Daniel loosened his tie.
“I already did.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You didn’t.”
Daniel walked toward the window.
“You’re overreacting.”
“Am I?”
Victoria held up her phone.
She had photographed one of the documents.
“I looked at the date.”
Daniel turned.
“What about it?”
“Six months after your divorce.”
“Yes.”
“And Emma’s signature is there.”
“She gave me authorization.”
Victoria stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because it wasn’t relevant.”
“It is now.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“You don’t understand business.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“I understand lying.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
“Then explain it.”
He couldn’t.
Victoria packed her purse.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“You’re staying with me tonight.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
She stopped at the door.
“I met you because I thought you were successful.”
Daniel looked hurt.
“I am.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You were successful.”
Then she left.
The next morning, Daniel’s business partner Marcus Reed arrived at his office.
Marcus closed the door.
“We have a problem.”
Daniel barely looked up.
“What now?”
“Sterling Capital froze the remaining credit facilities.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“Richard called the bank.”
“He can’t do that.”
“He owns the controlling investment group.”
Daniel’s face darkened.
“This is revenge.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He placed a folder on the desk.
“This is what you did.”
Daniel opened it.
Financial transfers.
Loan documents.
Email records.
Marcus pointed toward the final page.
“You used Emma’s identity.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“I was going to fix it.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“You’ve been saying that for two years.”
Daniel slammed the folder shut.
“You’re supposed to be my partner.”
“I was.”
Marcus looked at him sadly.
“Until I realized I was helping you destroy the person who built this company.”
Daniel froze.
“What did you say?”
Marcus stood.
“Emma built the foundation.”
“No.”
“She found your first investors.”
“No.”
“She convinced Richard to give you the credit line.”
“Stop.”
“She saved you when the company nearly collapsed.”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“And you think she deserves it all?”
Marcus looked at him.
“I think she deserves the truth.”
Then he walked out.
Daniel remained alone.
Outside his window, New York continued moving.
But his world had stopped.
