His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan

Chapter 5

Daniel called four days later.

I almost didn’t answer.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“My parents know about us.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“They found out.”

“What did they say?”

“They want me to marry Olivia.”

I closed my eyes.

“I thought you said you weren’t together.”

“We aren’t.”

“Then why marriage?”

“Because of Noah.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So you can give him a family?”

“Something like that.”

“Something like that?”

Daniel sighed.

“They think if Olivia and I marry, it will make things easier.”

“And you?”

“I don’t love her.”

I was silent.

“Emma, listen to me.”

I didn’t want to.

“My heart is with you.”

“Then don’t marry her.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“I need to find a way to stay close to my son.”

He explained the plan.

A marriage on paper.

A legal arrangement.

A way to obtain the documents and move overseas.

He promised it would be temporary.

He promised there would be no real relationship.

He promised he would return.

Then he said the words that destroyed whatever hope I had left.

“I just need you to wait for me.”

Wait.

The word stayed in my head long after the call ended.

I finally understood.

He wasn’t choosing Olivia because he loved her.

He wasn’t choosing me because he loved me either.

He was choosing the option that made his life easiest.

And he wanted me waiting in case the first plan failed.
