His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan
Chapter 7
My father found out a week later.
He saw Daniel’s name on my phone.
He didn’t ask gently.
“Who is he?”
I froze.
“Dad…”
“Who?”
I sat down.
Then I told him everything.
Daniel.
The son.
The ex.
The secret relationship.
The fake marriage.
The plan to move overseas.
My father listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he was quiet for a long time.
Then he asked one question.
“If that woman agreed to marry him tomorrow, would he still ask you to wait?”
I couldn’t answer.
He nodded slowly.
“That is your answer.”
I began crying.
“I love him.”
“I know.”
“He loves me too.”
My father looked at me.
“Maybe he does.”
I looked up.
“Then why doesn’t it feel like love?”
My father sat beside me.
“Because love isn’t only what someone feels.”
He placed his hand over mine.
“It’s what they are willing to choose.”
That sentence stayed with me.
For years, I had feared being abandoned.
So whenever someone stayed—even halfway—I convinced myself it was enough.
But perhaps I had been measuring love by how desperately I could hold onto someone.
Not by whether they were holding onto me.
