His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan

Chapter 1

For as long as I could remember, I had wanted something that seemed painfully ordinary to everyone else.

A home.

A mother.

A father waiting at the dinner table.

Someone who would ask how my day had been and actually want to hear the answer.

I never knew my mother.

My parents divorced when I was still too young to understand what divorce meant.

One day, she was there.

Then she wasn’t.

My father never spoke badly about her.

He simply raised my younger sister and me the best way he knew how.

He worked until his hands were rough.

He came home exhausted.

He learned to cook.

He learned how to braid my sister’s hair.

He attended every school meeting.

He became both parents because there was nobody else.

My grandparents and aunts helped whenever they could, but I still grew up carrying one quiet fear.

That people I loved could leave.

Maybe that was why, when I met Daniel Brooks, I fell so hard.

Daniel was thirty-four, an engineer, and unlike most men I had dated, he seemed to know exactly what he wanted.

He listened when I talked.

He remembered small things.

He never rushed me.

And from the beginning, he told me the truth about his past.

“I have a son,” he said during our third date.

I stared at him.

“How old?”

“Eight.”

“And his mother?”

“My ex-girlfriend.”

“Were you married?”

“No.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“We were young. We had Noah, but we never married.”

I appreciated his honesty.

“What happened between you?”

“We weren’t right for each other.”

“And now?”

“She lives overseas with Noah.”

He paused.

“I love my son. But Olivia and I are over.”

I believed him.

Maybe because I wanted to.

Maybe because I had spent my entire childhood dreaming of a family and desperately wanted to believe I had finally found the man who could give me one.

Daniel made me feel safe.

And when I finally told him about my childhood, he held my hand.

“You’ll never have to feel alone again,” he whispered.

Those words became everything to me.

I didn’t know then that the person who made me feel safest would eventually become the reason I questioned everything I believed about love.
