His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan
Chapter 14
A year after the day everything fell apart, Daniel and I met again at the same café where he had once asked me to take a break.
He arrived early.
I arrived even earlier.
We both laughed when we realized it.
“How have you been?”
“Good.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
He smiled.
“So…”
“So.”
Neither of us knew what to say.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“I don’t need you to wait for me anymore.”
I smiled.
“I know.”
“And I don’t want to ask you to.”
“I know.”
He looked nervous.
For the first time since I had known him, Daniel Brooks looked like a man who couldn’t control the outcome.
And strangely, that made me trust him more.
“I still love you,” he said.
I looked at him.
“I know.”
“Do you still love me?”
I took a breath.
“Yes.”
His eyes softened.
“But love isn’t enough.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“I need honesty.”
“You’ll have it.”
“I need to be chosen.”
“You will be.”
“And I need to know that if life becomes difficult, you won’t keep another woman waiting while you figure out what you want.”
Daniel smiled.
“I won’t.”
I looked at the man sitting across from me.
The engineer I had loved.
The father who had been afraid.
The man who had once treated me like a backup plan.
He wasn’t perfect.
But he had finally learned something.
Love wasn’t about keeping every door open.
It was about having the courage to close the wrong ones.
I reached across the table.
He took my hand.
And for the first time, I didn’t feel like someone’s second choice.
I felt chosen.
Not because another woman had walked away.
Not because there was nobody else.
But because he had finally learned how to choose me.
And perhaps that was the home I had been searching for all my life.
Not a perfect family.
Not a man who promised never to leave.
Just two people who were finally brave enough to stay—by choice.
