Olivia refused.

I learned that from Daniel himself.

“She won’t agree.”

I stared at my phone.

“So what happens now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you still planning to marry her?”

“I’m trying to figure things out.”

I almost laughed.

“What does that mean?”

“Emma, please.”

“No.”

I was tired.

For the first time, I was genuinely tired.

He continued contacting me.

Every few days.

Sometimes he asked how I was.

Sometimes he said he missed me.

Sometimes he said:

“Just give me a little more time.”

I noticed something.

Every message came after Olivia rejected another part of his plan.

When she refused to marry him, he called me.

When she stopped responding, he called me.

When his parents pressured him, he called me.

And suddenly the pattern became impossible to ignore.

If Olivia said yes, he would leave.

If Olivia said no, he would return.

I wasn’t his destination.

I was the road he planned to take only if the other road was blocked.
