His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan
Chapter 10
Daniel came to my apartment the next morning.
“You disappeared.”
“I needed space.”
“We need to talk.”
“No.”
He looked shocked.
“Emma.”
“I know everything.”
His face changed.
“About what?”
“The marriage.”
He swallowed.
“Olivia talked to you.”
“Yes.”
“I can explain.”
“You don’t need to.”
“Please.”
I stepped aside.
He entered.
“I love you,” he said.
I looked at him.
“I believe you.”
His eyes filled with relief.
Then I continued.
“But that’s not enough.”
He went still.
“I can’t keep waiting while you decide whether another woman will say yes.”
“That’s not what I’m doing.”
“Then what are you doing?”
“I was trying to protect my son.”
“I know.”
“I can’t lose him.”
“You won’t.”
“I might.”
“You might lose me.”
He stared at me.
I took a breath.
“You keep saying you’re afraid of losing your son.”
“But you’re not afraid of losing me.”
He looked devastated.
I continued.
“You were willing to marry someone else and ask me to wait quietly.”
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“You didn’t want to choose.”
Silence.
Daniel finally whispered:
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
He looked at me.
“I was scared my whole life that people would leave me.”
My voice broke.
“And I still learned that being someone’s backup is worse than being alone.”
