His Ex-Girlfriend Came Back With Their Son — And Suddenly I Became His Backup Plan

Chapter 4

Two weeks after Noah arrived, Daniel asked me to meet him.

He chose a quiet café far from our usual places.

I knew something was wrong before he spoke.

“Emma…”

I waited.

“I think we need to take a break.”

My heart stopped.

“Why?”

He looked down.

“I need to focus on my son.”

“You can do that.”

“I know.”

“So why are you ending this?”

“I’m not ending it.”

“It sounds like you are.”

He rubbed his face.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You already are.”

He closed his eyes.

“I’ve been selfish.”

I stared at him.

“What changed?”

“My son came home.”

The words felt like a knife.

“I thought you said he wouldn’t affect us.”

“He doesn’t.”

“Then what is this?”

He didn’t answer.

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“Do you still love me?”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then why are you leaving?”

“Because I have responsibilities.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I whispered:

“Am I one of them?”

His silence answered for him.

I walked out before he could see me cry.

For the first time since meeting Daniel, I didn’t call him.

I didn’t ask him to come back.

I didn’t beg.

I simply went home.

And sat beside the father who had spent his entire life teaching me what unconditional love was supposed to look like.
