She’s With Me — Single Dad Spoke Calmly, The Billionaire Heiress Stood Frozen at the Table

Chapter 1

The crystal wineglass slipped from Victoria Ashford’s fingers and shattered beneath the table.

Every conversation in the private dining room stopped.

At the far end of the long table, a man in an ordinary dark coat had just pulled out a chair for a young woman everyone else had spent the evening pretending not to see.

Then he said four quiet words.

“She’s with me.”

Why would a man dressed like a struggling father claim the attention of a woman standing beside the most powerful family in the city?

And why had Victoria Ashford—the billionaire heiress whose name could make bankers stand—gone completely pale?

Daniel Mercer did not seem to notice.

Or perhaps he simply no longer cared.

He placed a hand against the back of the empty chair beside him and looked at the woman standing uncertainly near the servants’ entrance.

“Sit down, Emma.”

Emma Carter stared at him.

“Daniel, I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Your daughter—”

“Already asked for you.”

At the other side of Daniel, seven-year-old Lily Mercer nodded fiercely.

“She did.”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Emma’s hands tightened around the small leather purse she carried. Her dress was simple, carefully mended at one sleeve. She had not come to the Ashford Foundation dinner as a guest.

She had come to deliver flowers.

Victoria had personally noticed her the moment she entered.

Now Victoria’s eyes remained fixed on Daniel.

Not Emma.

Daniel.

“You,” Victoria whispered.

Daniel slowly turned.

For a moment, the room seemed to shrink.

Victoria had spent ten years trying to erase his face from her memory.

But there he was.

Older.

More tired.

A faint scar ran along his jaw.

His expensive suit had been replaced by a coat with worn cuffs.

And yet his eyes were exactly the same.

“Good evening, Victoria.”

The silence became unbearable.

Victoria’s father, Charles Ashford, narrowed his eyes.

“Do you know this man?”

Daniel looked toward him.

“We met once.”

Victoria stood abruptly.

The legs of her chair scraped against the polished floor.

“Once?” she said.

Her voice cracked on the word.

Daniel’s daughter looked from one adult to another.

“Daddy?”

Daniel immediately softened.

“It’s all right, sweetheart.”

But it was not all right.

Victoria knew it.

Daniel knew it.

And Charles Ashford was beginning to understand that the man sitting at his table had brought a past with him that no amount of money could bury.

Victoria pointed toward Emma.

“And who is she?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then back at Victoria.

“She’s with me.”

Victoria froze.

Not because of the words.

Because ten years earlier, Daniel had said almost exactly the same thing to her.

Only then, he had been standing between her and the man who had destroyed both their lives.
