I Came Home From Deployment Three Days Early… Then I Found a Notebook With My Name on It

Chapter 1

Ethan Cole came home three days early.

He had spent the last twelve hours traveling, barely sleeping, and the final drive from the airport felt strangely unreal. His deployment had been exhausting, but what he remembered most clearly was the thought of his own front door.

His sister Mia had promised to keep the house in order while he was away.

Instead, she had asked her best friend, Claire Bennett, to house-sit.

Claire had been around since they were teenagers. She knew Mia’s habits, Ethan’s terrible coffee preferences, and every embarrassing family story.

She was the last person Ethan expected to find inside his house at six in the morning.

The front door opened quietly.

Ethan stepped inside.

The house smelled like coffee.

He froze.

There was a pair of women’s sneakers beside the couch.

A lamp was on.

And on the kitchen counter sat a notebook.

His name was written across the front.

ETHAN — DON’T OPEN THIS.

He stared at it.

Then he noticed something else.

There were dozens of small handwritten notes scattered across the counter.

Some were dated.

Some had his name on them.

One simply said:

He still doesn’t know.

Ethan’s exhaustion disappeared.

He picked up the notebook.

The first page contained only one sentence.

If you’re reading this, you came home earlier than expected.

Behind him, the floor creaked.

Ethan turned.

Claire stood at the kitchen entrance, pale and completely still.

She looked at the notebook in his hand.

Then she whispered,

“You’re not supposed to be home yet.”
