THE STORM THAT TESTED GREYHAVEN

Chapter 9

Ethan spent the morning repairing the harbor.

The damage was worse than he expected.

Several support beams needed replacing.

One section of the walkway had completely collapsed.

Walter handed Ethan a measuring tape.

“How bad?”

Ethan looked down.

“Bad.”

“Can we fix it?”

Ethan studied the structure.

“Yeah.”

Walter smiled.

“Good.”

They worked until noon.

Then until two.

Then until sunset.

Ethan’s hands were covered in dirt.

His back hurt.

His clothes were soaked again.

But nobody complained.

At one point, Caleb appeared with two bottles of water.

“Here.”

Ethan took one.

“Thanks.”

Caleb sat on the damaged pier.

“You know something?”

“What?”

“When you first came here, people didn’t know what to think about you.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?”

“You were quiet.”

“I still am.”

Caleb laughed.

“Yeah.”

He looked toward the town.

“But now nobody cares.”

Ethan smiled.

“Good.”

Caleb stood.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“There’s more work.”

Ethan followed.
