THE STORM THAT TESTED GREYHAVEN
Chapter 3
The storm became a fight against time.
Greyhaven’s streets filled with people carrying sandbags.
The community center became an emergency shelter.
The diner opened its doors.
June refused to close.
“We have food.”
Ethan stood in the doorway, soaked.
“How many people?”
“More than we can feed.”
June looked at the kitchen.
“We’ll figure it out.”
She always said that.
As though problems were simply things that became smaller when people worked together.
Ethan carried boxes inside.
A young man named Caleb followed him.
“What next?”
“Windows.”
They boarded the front windows.
Then the back.
Another gust hit.
The building shook.
A loud crash came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked through the window.
The old sign above the diner had broken loose.
He ran outside.
Caleb followed.
“Ethan!”
“Stay back!”
The sign swung violently above them.
Ethan grabbed the support cable.
Caleb grabbed the other end.
Together they pulled it down.
The wind screamed around them.
Rain ran down Ethan’s face.
He could barely keep his eyes open.
They finally secured the sign.
Caleb breathed heavily.
“That was stupid.”
Ethan laughed.
“Probably.”
“You going to do it again?”
Ethan looked at the storm.
“Probably.”
Caleb shook his head.
“You’re crazy.”
“So I’ve been told.”
