THE STORM THAT TESTED GREYHAVEN
Chapter 10
The diner became the heart of the recovery.
June cooked continuously.
Soup.
Bread.
Coffee.
Sandwiches.
Anything that could be made quickly.
People came in exhausted.
They ate.
They left.
Then returned with tools.
Ethan entered around sunset.
June looked at him.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
She placed a bowl in front of him.
“Eat.”
“I can help.”
“You can help by eating.”
Ethan sat.
Across the room, Walter was asleep in a chair.
Caleb was eating with his head nearly touching the table.
A young woman was wrapping someone’s injured hand.
An elderly couple shared a bowl of soup.
Ethan looked around.
The town was damaged.
But the diner felt strangely warm.
June sat beside him.
“How bad is the harbor?”
“Bad.”
“Can you fix it?”
Ethan nodded.
“We’ll fix it.”
June looked at him.
“You sound sure.”
Ethan looked toward the window.
Outside, people were still working.
“I’ve seen them fix worse.”
June smiled.
“Us?”
Ethan nodded.
“Us.”
