THE STORM THAT TESTED GREYHAVEN
Chapter 6
The storm lasted through the night.
By midnight, Greyhaven was exhausted.
The community center was full.
People slept on floors.
Children cried when the wind struck the building.
Adults whispered.
Some prayed.
Others simply sat in silence.
Ethan didn’t sleep.
He stood near the entrance.
Every few minutes, someone came in.
Cold.
Wet.
Shaking.
He helped them find a blanket.
Food.
A dry place to sit.
Then he went back outside.
Walter caught him around two in the morning.
“You need to rest.”
“I’m fine.”
“No.”
Walter looked at him.
“You’ve been working for twelve hours.”
Ethan glanced toward his hands.
They were scraped and bleeding.
Walter noticed.
“Come inside.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Ethan looked toward the dark street.
“Because people are still out there.”
Walter was quiet.
Then he nodded.
“All right.”
He picked up another flashlight.
“I’m coming.”
