Single Dad Stopped to Help a Struggling Old Man… Then He Met the Daughter Who Changed His Life

Chapter 1

Daniel Brooks was already late when he saw the old man on the side of the road.

Rain had started twenty minutes earlier, turning the narrow country highway into a sheet of silver.

Daniel’s seven-year-old daughter, Lily, sat in the back seat wearing a pink raincoat and holding a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy,” she asked, “are we going to miss the school fair?”

“Maybe by ten minutes.”

“Mommy always said being late was bad.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Your mother also used to say I drove too slowly.”

Lily giggled.

Daniel glanced at the clock.

He really should keep going.

The school fair started at six.

It was 5:42.

But then he saw the old man.

He was standing beside a dark blue sedan with its hood open.

One hand rested against the car.

The other held a broken umbrella.

No one else was stopping.

Daniel slowed.

Lily looked through the window.

“Is he okay?”

Daniel sighed.

“Probably not.”

He pulled onto the shoulder.

“Daddy?”

“I’ll be right back.”

He stepped into the rain.

The old man looked surprised.

“You need help?”

“My car died.”

Daniel looked under the hood.

“I don’t know much about engines.”

The old man laughed.

“Neither do I.”

Daniel smiled.

“Then we’re in trouble.”

The old man chuckled.

His clothes were soaked.

His shoes were muddy.

He looked exhausted.

Daniel called roadside assistance.

“Twenty-five minutes,” they said.

Daniel looked toward Lily.

She was watching from the back seat.

He opened the passenger door of his car.

“You can wait in here.”

The old man hesitated.

“I don’t want to bother you.”

“My daughter would never forgive me if I left someone standing in the rain.”

Lily immediately nodded.

“That’s true.”

The old man smiled.

He climbed into the front seat.

“My name is Arthur.”

“Daniel.”

“Lily.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Arthur looked at the little girl.

“Beautiful name.”

“Thank you.”

They waited.

Daniel noticed Arthur’s hands shaking.

“You okay?”

Arthur nodded.

“Just tired.”

“Have you eaten?”

Arthur laughed.

“Not since breakfast.”

Daniel opened the small bag of snacks in the center console.

“Take whatever you want.”

Arthur stared at him.

“You always stop for strangers?”

Daniel shrugged.

“Not always.”

“Why me?”

Daniel looked through the windshield.

“Because someone once stopped for me.”

Arthur studied him.

“What happened?”

“Long story.”

Arthur nodded.

“Those are usually the stories worth hearing.”

The tow truck eventually arrived.

Arthur got out.

Before closing the door, he turned.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Would you do me one more favor?”

“What?”

“Could you drive me home?”

Daniel hesitated.

The man’s house was almost twenty miles away.

His daughter was waiting.

The school fair was already starting.

Then Lily spoke from the back seat.

“We can go, Daddy.”

Daniel looked at her.

She smiled.

“Maybe he has nobody.”

Daniel sighed.

“All right.”

Arthur gave him an address.

Thirty-five minutes later, Daniel turned onto a long private road.

He slowed.

“What?”

The gate ahead opened automatically.

Daniel stared.

Beyond it stood a huge stone mansion overlooking the lake.

Lily looked out the window.

“Whoa.”

Arthur smiled.

“Welcome home.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You live here?”

Arthur looked tired again.

“I do.”

Then he added quietly,

“But my daughter doesn’t know I’m stranded on the road.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why not?”

Arthur looked toward the house.

“Because she thinks I’m safe.”

He paused.

“And because she isn’t going to be happy when she finds out I brought a stranger home.”

The front door opened.

A woman stepped outside.

She was tall, elegant, and visibly furious.

Her eyes landed on Arthur.

Then Daniel.

Then Lily.

Her expression changed completely.

“Dad?”

Arthur sighed.

“Hello, Sophia.”

Sophia walked toward the car.

“Who is this?”

Arthur smiled.

“The man who stopped when everyone else drove past.”

Sophia looked at Daniel.

And for a moment, neither spoke.

She had no idea that the stranger standing in her father’s driveway…

was about to change her life forever.
