Her Billionaire Father Offered Me ₦1 Billion to Leave Her… My Decision Changed My Life Forever!
Chapter 5
My father had disappeared twenty years earlier.
That was the story my mother had always told me.
He left one morning.
Never came back.
No body.
No explanation.
Just gone.
I had stopped asking questions when I was twelve.
Now, suddenly, every memory felt different.
I called my mother.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Did Dad know Richard Bennett?”
Silence.
Too long.
“Why are you asking?”
“Please.”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
My heart began pounding.
“How?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Mom.”
She sighed.
“They worked together.”
“Doing what?”
“Construction.”
I looked at Olivia.
Her face had gone pale.
“Where?”
“Lagos.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
I swallowed.
“Did Dad know Olivia’s mother?”
My mother stopped breathing.
“Who told you that name?”
“Mom.”
Her voice trembled.
“Daniel, stay away from the Bennett family.”
“Why?”
“Because your father did.”
The call ended.
I looked at Olivia.
“She knows.”
“What?”
“Our parents knew each other.”
We started investigating.
Old newspaper archives.
Property records.
Business registrations.
Anything we could find.
Then we discovered something.
Twenty-five years ago, Richard Bennett wasn’t a billionaire.
He was a young construction executive working on a major development project.
My father was his project manager.
Olivia’s mother was an accountant.
And three of them had accused a powerful contractor of stealing millions from the project.
The contractor disappeared.
So did my father.
Olivia’s mother died several years later.
The official cause was a car accident.
But the more we looked, the less accidental it seemed.
Then we found the company.
Bennett Holdings.
It had been created six months after my father’s disappearance.
Olivia stared at the screen.
“My father built everything after that.”
I nodded.
“Using what?”
She looked at me.
“Money from the project.”
Neither of us spoke.
A terrible possibility was forming.
Maybe Richard hadn’t offered me ₦1 billion because he hated me.
Maybe he was terrified I would discover where his fortune came from.
That night, we broke into an abandoned office building listed under one of Bennett Holdings’ oldest subsidiaries.
We found boxes.
Old contracts.
Photographs.
Payment records.
Then Olivia found a file with my father’s name.
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten confession.
Daniel Carter did not disappear voluntarily.
My hands went cold.
I turned the page.
He discovered that Richard Bennett had transferred the stolen funds into an offshore account.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“Your father knew.”
I continued reading.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
If Richard finds out Daniel survived, he will kill him.
I looked at Olivia.
“Survived?”
She stared at me.
“My father may have been alive.”
Behind us, the office door slowly opened.
A man’s voice said:
“You shouldn’t have come here.”
