The next morning, Ethan waited outside Emma’s lecture.

She smiled when she saw him.

He handed her a coffee.

“Black. No sugar.”

She stared at it.

“How did you know?”

“You always order it.”

She smiled.

“You’re paying attention.”

“To everything.”

Her heart raced.

They were standing near the fountain.

One of them laughed.

“Harper, you’re seriously dating the babysitter now?”

Ethan stopped.

Emma felt embarrassed.

He turned toward his friends.

Ethan looked at Emma.

He didn’t answer.

Not yet.

He simply took her hand.

And walked away.

Emma squeezed his fingers.

“You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to.”

That night, they sat on the balcony at home.

Ethan finally said:

“I like you.”

Emma looked at him.

“I know.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I mean I really like you.”

She laughed softly.

“I really like you too.”

Neither kissed.

Not yet.
