She Took a Babysitting Job at a Billionaire’s Mansion — Then She Fell for the Son Who Thought She Didn’t Belong There
Chapter 2
Emma quickly learned that the Harper household had its own rhythm.
Victoria managed charity events.
Daniel Harper ran one of the largest private investment firms on the West Coast.
Ethan came and went whenever he wanted.
And Oliver had enough energy to keep three adults exhausted.
Emma loved the little boy almost immediately.
He loved dinosaurs, space documentaries, and asking questions no one was prepared for.
Why was the moon following the car?
Why did rich people have elevators?
Why did Ethan never clean his room?
That last question made Emma laugh.
“Maybe you should ask him.”
“I did.”
“What did he say?”
“He said his room isn’t messy. It’s creative.”
Emma laughed again.
Then Ethan appeared in the doorway.
“Traitor.”
Oliver pointed at him.
“Your room is messy.”
“Whose side are you on?”
“Emma’s.”
Ethan looked at her.
She smiled.
“Sorry.”
“You’re enjoying this.”
“A little.”
For a few days, they avoided each other whenever possible.
Emma focused on Oliver.
Ethan focused on his friends, parties, and whatever else occupied his life.
Then one evening, Emma found Ethan asleep on the living-room couch.
He had clearly been out the night before.
A textbook was lying open beside him.
She noticed his Westbridge student ID.
She frowned.
“You’re actually studying?”
His eyes opened.
“Sometimes.”
“You missed class.”
“I know.”
“You’ll fail.”
He looked at her.
“You sound like my mother.”
“Maybe your mother is right.”
He smiled.
“You’re becoming annoying.”
“Good.”
He laughed.
And for a few seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Emma remembered who he was.
She stood.
“I need to get Oliver ready for bed.”
Ethan watched her leave.
He couldn’t explain why her footsteps bothered him once they disappeared upstairs.
