She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy
Chapter 6
My mother lived two hours away.
I drove there with Claire and Lily.
The entire trip, my mother remained silent on the phone.
When we arrived, she was waiting outside.
She hugged me.
Then looked at Claire.
Her expression changed.
“You’re her.”
Claire frowned.
“Excuse me?”
My mother took a breath.
“Your father knew yours.”
Claire stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Mom.
“What are you talking about?”
She led us inside.
On the table was an old photograph.
Two men standing outside a bank.
My father.
Robert Cross.
I stared.
“They knew each other.”
My mother nodded.
“For years.”
“What did they do?”
“Business.”
“What kind?”
“Investment.”
Claire looked at me.
“So their fathers were connected.”
My mother continued.
“Your father and Robert created the trust.”
“For Lily?”
“Yes.”
Claire’s face went pale.
“Why?”
“Because they knew their sons were dangerous.”
I stared.
“My father knew Ryan?”
“He knew what Ryan was becoming.”
“And Robert?”
“He protected his son anyway.”
There was silence.
Then my mother opened a folder.
Inside were letters.
My father had written several.
The first was dated eight years ago.
Robert, if our sons ever turn against the women in their lives, the trust must remain protected.
Claire read it twice.
“My father knew.”
My mother nodded.
“Your father and Robert had planned the trust together.”
“Then why did Robert become trustee?”
“Because your father trusted him.”
“That was a mistake.”
“Yes.”
Another letter showed my father warning Robert.
Ryan has started asking questions about the trust. Do not give him control.
Claire covered her mouth.
“He knew.”
My mother nodded.
“Your father suspected he was already manipulating Claire.”
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he didn’t want you involved.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Mom gave me another envelope.
“This was supposed to be given to you if Robert ever tried to change the trust.”
I opened it.
Inside was a legal authorization.
My father had appointed another trustee.
Me.
I stared.
“I was seventeen.”
“You couldn’t accept it then.”
“Now I can.”
Claire looked at me.
“What does this mean?”
Michael confirmed it when we called him.
If the document was valid, I could petition the court to replace Robert.
But there was a complication.
The document required evidence that Robert had violated the trust’s purpose.
We had to prove Ryan’s family was attempting to control Lily for financial gain.
That meant the entire stalking case was now connected to the trust.
Claire sat beside me that night.
“I feel like your father knew everything.”
“Maybe not everything.”
“But enough.”
She sighed.
“I wish mine had.”
I looked at her.
“Your father tried to protect you.”
“He failed.”
“So did mine.”
She smiled sadly.
“Maybe we’re both carrying things they couldn’t finish.”
I reached for her hand.
“Then we’ll finish them.”
She looked at me.
“You say that like it’s simple.”
“It isn’t.”
“Then why?”
“Because Lily deserves a future nobody can control.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“She deserves a father.”
I froze.
She realized what she’d said.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I shouldn’t have said that.”
I squeezed her hand.
“Don’t apologize.”
She looked away.
“It’s complicated.”
“I know.”
Then Lily walked into the room holding a blanket.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Can Daniel sleep here?”
Claire laughed through tears.
“He probably needs to go home.”
Lily frowned.
“Why?”
I smiled.
“Because I have a house.”
She thought about it.
Then said,
“You can come back tomorrow.”
I laughed.
“I will.”
As I drove home that night, I realized something.
I had started helping Claire because a stranger had sat at my table.
Now I wasn’t just protecting her.
I was fighting for a little girl’s future.
And somewhere along the way, protecting them had become personal.
Very personal.
