He Had $17, One Broken Guitar, and Nowhere to Sleep — Then America’s Biggest Band Called His Name
CHAPTER 1
Ethan Cole counted the money twice.
Seventeen dollars.
That was everything he had.
Seventeen dollars, an old backpack, two shirts, and a guitar with a crack running across its wooden body.
He sat on a bench outside a bus station in Nashville while rain fell around him.
For a moment, he wondered if his father had been right.
Dreams don’t pay the bills.
His father had said that many times.
But his father had also been the man who taught Ethan how to play guitar.
He had died three years earlier with nothing except an old instrument and a box of unfinished songs.
Ethan had kept both.
Now he was twenty-two, unemployed, nearly broke, and standing in a city filled with thousands of musicians who wanted exactly what he wanted.
To be heard.
He walked downtown.
By sunset, his shoes were soaked.
He stopped outside a crowded bar and noticed a small group of musicians playing beneath an awning.
The guitarist suddenly broke a string.
The music stopped.
Without thinking, Ethan opened his guitar case.
“Mind if I play?”
The musicians laughed.
One of them shrugged.
“Go ahead, kid.”
Ethan sat down.
His fingers touched the strings.
Then he played.
The conversations around him slowly disappeared.
His voice wasn’t perfect.
It was better than perfect.
It sounded wounded.
Honest.
Like someone who had lost everything and was still stubborn enough to hope.
People stopped walking.
A woman came out of the bar.
A man stopped smoking.
Someone dropped a coin into his guitar case.
Then another.
Then another.
Ethan kept playing.
He didn’t notice the tall man standing across the street.
The man wore a black coat and an old baseball cap.
He listened to the final note.
His face had gone completely pale.
Because Ethan wasn’t playing a random song.
He was playing a melody the man had not heard in twenty-five years.
A melody written by a musician who had supposedly died forgotten.
A musician named Samuel Cole.
Ethan’s father.
The stranger whispered:
“Where did you learn that song?”
Ethan looked up.
“From my father.”
The man’s expression changed.
“What was his name?”
“Samuel.”
The stranger took one step backward.
Then another.
Because he knew something Ethan didn’t.
Samuel Cole hadn’t simply been a failed musician.
He had once been the missing sixth member of America’s greatest band.
And the man standing in the rain had been the reason he disappeared.
