She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy
Chapter 7
The court petition was filed three days later.
Ryan responded immediately.
His attorney accused Claire of creating a false stalking narrative to prevent him from seeing Lily.
They claimed she was manipulating me.
They claimed the trust dispute had been manufactured.
They claimed I had a romantic interest in Claire.
That last part was true.
But it didn’t make the rest false.
Michael prepared us for court.
“Don’t exaggerate.”
“I won’t.”
“Don’t speculate.”
“I won’t.”
“Just tell the truth.”
Claire nodded.
The hearing began.
Ryan appeared with two attorneys.
He looked calm.
Confident.
Almost charming.
I understood immediately how Claire had once fallen for him.
He had the kind of face people trusted.
Ryan looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Daniel.”
I didn’t respond.
The judge asked Claire questions.
She answered carefully.
The messages were presented.
The surveillance evidence.
The stolen van.
The attempted pickup of Lily.
Ryan denied everything.
He claimed he never sent the messages.
His attorneys suggested his phone had been hacked.
Then they introduced the issue of my relationship with Claire.
“Mr. Hayes,” one attorney asked, “when did you become romantically involved with Ms. Morgan?”
“We haven’t.”
“Do you love her?”
Michael objected.
The judge allowed the question.
I looked at Claire.
Then answered honestly.
“Yes.”
The courtroom went silent.
Claire’s eyes filled.
Ryan’s expression changed.
The attorney continued.
“Does that influence your testimony?”
“No.”
“Are you seeking financial benefit from the trust?”
“No.”
“Then why are you involved?”
I answered,
“Because a child was frightened and needed someone to protect her.”
The attorney smiled.
“Or because you want to become her father?”
That question hit me harder than expected.
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting beside Claire.
I said,
“I don’t know what I will become to her.”
I paused.
“But I know what I won’t become.”
“What is that?”
“Someone who walks away.”
The courtroom became quiet again.
The judge reserved decision.
Outside, Claire cried.
“I didn’t expect you to say that.”
“I meant it.”
She looked at me.
“Why?”
“Because I love you.”
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered,
“I love you too.”
We held each other in the courthouse hallway.
For one moment, everything was quiet.
Then a man appeared.
Ryan’s father.
Robert Cross.
He approached us.
“Daniel.”
I turned.
“You know me?”
“I knew your father.”
“So did mine.”
Robert smiled.
“He was a fool.”
My jaw tightened.
“You trusted him.”
“I regretted it.”
“What did you do to the trust?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why is your son trying to control it?”
Robert’s expression hardened.
“Because he has a right to his daughter.”
“Not her money.”
Silence.
Robert leaned closer.
“You think you’re saving them.”
“I am.”
“You have no idea what you’re stepping into.”
“What does that mean?”
He looked at Claire.
“Ask your father what he promised mine.”
Then he walked away.
Claire looked at me.
“What did he mean?”
“I don’t know.”
That night, my mother gave us another letter.
This one had never been opened.
It was from Claire’s father.
To mine.
The first line said:
If our sons ever discover what happened, they must know that the money was never the point.
I read on.
The trust wasn’t created to protect wealth.
It was created to protect Lily from a secret inheritance.
A piece of land.
A large tract of land held in trust.
The land was worth millions.
And it sat directly beneath a planned luxury development.
Ryan’s family wanted control of it.
That was why they wanted Lily.
That was why they wanted Claire unstable.
The money had been a distraction.
The land was the real prize.
