She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy
Chapter 4
I turned the car around immediately.
Claire was waiting outside her sister’s house.
Police cars were already there.
Maria arrived ten minutes later.
“Tell me everything.”
Claire was crying.
“She was asleep upstairs.”
“Window?”
“Locked.”
“Door?”
“Locked.”
“Who was here?”
“My sister. Her husband. Me.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
Maria looked at me.
“You?”
“I was outside.”
Maria nodded.
“Any cameras?”
The house had two.
One at the driveway.
One at the back door.
The footage showed nothing.
No one entered.
No one left.
Then Maria noticed something.
“Stop.”
The video froze.
A delivery van passed the house at 11:42 p.m.
No logo.
No visible company name.
Maria zoomed in.
“License plate.”
We got it.
The van had been reported stolen.
And twenty minutes later, Lily was found.
She wasn’t with Ryan.
She was two streets away.
A woman had found her standing near a bus stop.
Alive.
Cold.
Terrified.
Claire ran to her.
“Lily!”
The little girl threw herself into her mother’s arms.
“Mommy!”
“I’ve got you.”
Lily cried.
“I wanted to come home.”
“We’re going home.”
The police asked questions.
Lily remembered almost nothing.
Only a man in a dark coat.
He had told her:
“Your mother wants you to go with me.”
Claire covered her face.
I stood nearby.
Then Lily saw me.
She stopped crying.
“Daniel?”
I crouched.
“Hey.”
She ran into my arms.
I didn’t know what to do.
So I held her.
Claire looked at us.
Something changed in her expression.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Something warmer.
Later that night, Lily fell asleep on my couch.
Claire sat beside her.
“You don’t have to stay.”
“I know.”
“But you’re still here.”
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“Why?”
“Because she’s scared.”
“So are you.”
I smiled.
“A little.”
Claire reached for my hand.
“I’ve spent months waiting for someone to believe me.”
“I believe you.”
She looked at me.
“You shouldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t know everything.”
“Then tell me.”
She took a breath.
“I left Ryan after I discovered what he was doing with my finances.”
“What?”
“He had been moving money from an account I shared with my father.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Your father?”
“Dead.”
She looked down.
“Two years before Lily was born.”
“Did he leave you anything?”
“A small investment account.”
“How much?”
“Enough to make Ryan interested.”
I understood.
Money.
Control.
Access.
It all fit.
“What did he take?”
“Almost three hundred thousand dollars.”
I stared.
“That’s why he won’t stop.”
“Yes.”
She looked at Lily.
“He thinks if he gets control of me again, he gets access to the money.”
“Is it still there?”
“No.”
“Where is it?”
She hesitated.
“My father put it into a trust.”
“Whose name?”
“Lily’s.”
I stared.
Suddenly everything made sense.
Ryan didn’t simply want Claire.
He wanted Lily because Lily controlled the money.
Claire was the gatekeeper.
And now Ryan was becoming desperate.
I looked at the sleeping child.
“We need a lawyer.”
“I have one.”
“Not good enough.”
She gave me a tired smile.
“Bossy.”
“Experienced.”
I contacted Michael Reed, a family attorney I trusted.
He came the next morning.
He reviewed the custody documents.
Then the trust documents.
His expression changed.
“Claire, this isn’t just an investment trust.”
“What is it?”
“It’s a protected family trust.”
“Meaning?”
“Ryan can’t access it.”
She exhaled.
“But there is a condition.”
“What?”
Michael looked at me.
“The trustee can be replaced if there’s evidence of coercion.”
Claire looked confused.
“Who is the trustee?”
Michael checked the document.
Then stared at the signature.
“Ryan’s father.”
Silence.
Claire’s face went pale.
Her ex wasn’t just watching her.
His own family controlled Lily’s trust.
And if he could prove Claire was unstable, he could take control of it.
