She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy

Chapter 9

The pregnancy changed everything.

Claire became more protective of Lily.

I became more protective of both of them.

Noah noticed immediately.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Why is Claire here all the time?”

I looked at him.

“She needs us.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

That was Noah.

Simple.

He didn’t care about money.

Or complicated adults.

He cared about whether people were safe.

One evening, Claire told him the truth.

“I have a baby.”

Noah’s eyes widened.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Is it mine too?”

Claire laughed.

“Maybe.”

He looked at me.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you happy?”

I nodded.

“Very.”

Noah smiled.

“Good.”

Then he ran to Lily.

“You’re going to be a big sister.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

She ran to Claire.

“Mom!”

Claire knelt.

“Slowly.”

Lily hugged her.

Then looked at me.

“Dad?”

I smiled.

“What?”

She pointed at my stomach.

“No.”

She giggled.

“Your baby.”

We laughed.

For a moment, it felt like a normal family.

Then the legal fight returned.

The hearing about the trust approached.

Michael discovered something important.

Robert Cross had already signed a preliminary land transfer agreement.

If he remained trustee, the land could be sold.

The agreement had one condition.

Lily’s legal status.

If Ryan gained partial custody, the transfer would proceed.

This was the evidence we needed.

Robert had a financial motive.

He was not protecting Lily.

He was using her.

At court, Michael presented the agreement.

Ryan’s lawyers objected.

But Robert’s signature was clear.

The judge ordered a temporary freeze on the land.

Then came the custody decision.

Ryan asked for joint custody.

Claire begged the judge not to allow it.

I sat beside her.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Months of messages.

The attempted abduction.

The stalking.

The financial motive.

The trust conflict.

Then the ruling came.

Ryan was denied unsupervised custody.

Robert was removed as trustee pending full review.

A new independent trustee would be appointed.

Claire burst into tears.

I held her.

Ryan stared at us.

He looked furious.

But then he smiled.

That frightened me more than anger.

Outside the courthouse, he approached me.

“You think you won.”

I stood between him and Claire.

“This isn’t a game.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“It’s war.”

Then he walked away.

That night, Claire couldn’t sleep.

She sat on the balcony.

I joined her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to talk?”

“I keep thinking he’ll come back.”

“He will.”

She looked at me.

I continued.

“But next time, he won’t find you alone.”

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“I don’t know how to thank you.”

“You don’t need to.”

“I do.”

She looked at me.

“You gave me a home.”

I smiled.

“You gave me a family.”

Her eyes filled.

She whispered,

“I think I started falling in love with you the first day.”

I laughed.

“Across the café table?”

“Yes.”

“When I was eating a sandwich?”

“Yes.”

“That is not romantic.”

“It was to me.”

I kissed her forehead.

Then she took my hand.

“Will you stay?”

“Always.”

She closed her eyes.

For the first time in months, she looked peaceful.

But neither of us knew the biggest threat was still ahead.

Because the independent audit had uncovered something buried in the trust.

A second beneficiary.

Someone who could legally challenge Lily’s inheritance.

The name was Ryan.

But beside his name was another.

Mine.
