She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy

Chapter 13

A year had passed since Claire first sat at my table.

The café was thriving.

Noah and Lily had become inseparable.

Claire had opened her own bookkeeping business.

She no longer worked remotely for other people.

She had her own clients.

Her own schedule.

Her own income.

Most importantly, she wasn’t afraid to walk outside alone.

The protective order remained in place.

Ryan’s contact with Lily was limited.

Andrew was awaiting trial.

The land remained protected.

Life had become normal.

Almost.

Claire and I had moved into a larger house.

Not because we needed luxury.

Because we needed room.

A nursery had been painted.

Noah had chosen the color.

Lily had chosen the wallpaper.

The baby was due in four weeks.

One evening, I found Claire standing in the nursery.

She held a tiny pair of socks.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“I was just thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

She smiled.

“About the first day.”

“When you scared me with the whole ‘my ex is watching’ thing?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were going to ruin my lunch.”

“You did.”

She laughed.

“I didn’t mean to.”

“I know.”

She looked around.

“Everything changed.”

I walked toward her.

“You changed first.”

“How?”

“You trusted me.”

She smiled.

“Eventually.”

“That’s enough.”

She touched my face.

“I was so afraid.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I let someone close, they’d use it against me.”

“And now?”

“Now I think being loved is what makes you brave enough to fight.”

I kissed her.

Then Lily came running in.

“Daddy!”

I looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Can you help me?”

“With what?”

She held up a drawing.

It showed our house.

Six people.

Me.

Claire.

Lily.

Noah.

The baby.

And a small dog.

“We don’t have a dog.”

“We will.”

She sounded very sure.

I laughed.

“Apparently.”

She pointed to the drawing.

“That’s our family.”

I looked at Claire.

Her eyes filled.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Our family.”

That night, after the children slept, Claire sat beside me on the couch.

“I have something for you.”

“What?”

She handed me a small box.

Inside was a key.

“What is this?”

“The first key to the old apartment.”

“The apartment where you lived before?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“I kept it.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where I learned that someone could open a door without asking for anything.”

I looked at her.

“You’re giving it to me?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m giving you the memory.”

She kissed my hand.

“We don’t need to remember the fear.”

“Then what do we remember?”

“The table.”

I smiled.

“What about it?”

“The day I sat down and said, ‘My ex is watching.’”

“I remember.”

“And you looked at me and decided to help.”

I nodded.

“Best decision I ever made.”

She leaned against me.

“Mine too.”

Then she whispered,

“There is one thing I still haven’t told you.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“When Lily called you Daddy at the courthouse…”

“Yes?”

“I was afraid you’d feel trapped.”

I smiled.

“Never.”

“I wanted to hear it.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because I had spent so long believing love meant losing freedom.”

She touched my chest.

“But with you, love felt like coming home.”

I kissed her.

Then the baby kicked.

Claire laughed.

“Someone agrees.”

I placed my hand on her stomach.

“She’s going to be stubborn.”

“How do you know it’s a girl?”

“I don’t.”

“Then stop guessing.”

We laughed.

And for the first time, the future didn’t scare either of us.
