She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy

Chapter 5

Michael told us the trust had been created by Claire’s father before he died.

Ryan’s father, Robert Cross, had become trustee because he was considered financially reliable.

That had been eight years ago.

No one expected Ryan and Claire to end up together.

But they did.

Then Ryan discovered the trust existed.

He wanted it.

Claire’s father had left one protection.

If the trustee acted against Lily’s interests, another trustee could be appointed.

“But who can do that?” I asked.

“The court.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

Claire looked devastated.

“We don’t have months.”

“No,” Michael said.

“We don’t.”

I asked,

“What happens if Ryan gets temporary custody?”

“He can petition to control Lily’s trust.”

Claire closed her eyes.

I felt anger rising.

“Then we need evidence that he is stalking her.”

“We have the messages.”

“Not enough.”

“The attempted abduction.”

“Still difficult.”

“The stolen van.”

“Circumstantial.”

I looked at Michael.

“What would be enough?”

“A recording.”

Claire looked at me.

“No.”

I knew what she meant.

“No traps.”

“We need him to admit what he wants.”

“It’s dangerous.”

“So is doing nothing.”

She looked away.

That afternoon, we created a plan.

Claire would respond to one of Ryan’s messages.

Not alone.

The police would monitor.

She would tell him she had the trust documents.

She would meet him publicly.

But Ryan didn’t come.

Instead, a woman arrived.

She was older.

Elegant.

Confident.

She introduced herself as Robert Cross’s attorney.

“I represent the Cross family.”

Claire looked at her.

“Why are you here?”

“To discuss Lily.”

“She isn’t yours.”

“No.”

The woman looked at me.

“But her financial future is.”

I stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

“Peace.”

Claire almost laughed.

“That’s not what your family wants.”

The attorney opened a file.

“Ryan is willing to stop contacting you if you agree to a custody arrangement.”

“No.”

“And if you sign over trustee authority.”

“No.”

“Then this will become a legal battle.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“I’ve already been fighting one.”

The attorney stood.

“Then fight carefully.”

She left.

Claire looked exhausted.

“I hate this.”

I put my hand on her shoulder.

“You don’t have to fight it alone.”

She leaned against me.

“Why do you keep saying that?”

“Because it’s true.”

She looked into my eyes.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then Lily ran into the room.

“Mom!”

Claire immediately turned.

“What happened?”

Lily held up a drawing.

It showed a house.

Three people.

A little girl.

A woman.

A man.

Claire stared.

“Who’s this?”

Lily pointed.

“Mommy.”

Then the woman.

“Me.”

Then the man.

She looked at me.

“Daniel.”

Something inside me shifted.

Claire saw it too.

Lily smiled.

“Daddy Daniel.”

Silence.

Claire’s eyes widened.

Lily didn’t notice.

She simply ran back to her crayons.

I looked at Claire.

“She called me…”

“I heard.”

“I don’t think she understands.”

“She understands more than adults think.”

We both looked at Lily.

Claire whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“She likes you.”

“I like her too.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I know.”

She looked down.

“She hasn’t called another man Daddy since Ryan.”

I didn’t know what to say.

So I said,

“She doesn’t have to call me anything.”

Claire looked at me.

“I know.”

But something had changed.

The room felt different.

That night, Ryan sent another message.

I know where Lily is.

Then another.

I know who Daniel is.

Then:

Ask him what his father did to mine.

I stared at the screen.

“What does my father have to do with Ryan’s family?”

Claire looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

But the next morning, my mother called.

Her voice was trembling.

“Daniel?”

“Mom?”

“I need you to come home.”

“Why?”

“There is something about your father I’ve never told you.”
