She Sat Down At My Table And Said, ‘My Ex Is Watching’… A Year Later His Daughter Called Me Daddy
Chapter 8
The land changed everything.
It explained why Ryan had never simply walked away.
It explained the pressure.
The legal manipulation.
The obsession with Lily’s trust.
And why Robert had worked so hard to remain trustee.
The property had been inherited through Claire’s family.
But legally, Lily was the final beneficiary.
If Lily was declared unable to manage the trust, a court-appointed guardian could eventually control it.
Ryan believed he could become that guardian.
Then he would control land worth millions.
Michael stared at the documents.
“This is a corporate acquisition disguised as a family dispute.”
“Who wants the land?” I asked.
He pointed to a development company.
Sterling Heights Group.
I recognized the name.
“They’ve been trying to buy property in this area for two years.”
“Exactly.”
Claire looked at me.
“Who owns it?”
Michael opened the corporate records.
His expression changed.
“Ryan’s father.”
I felt sick.
This had never been about family.
It was business.
Ryan had used Claire because she stood between him and a fortune.
But there was another problem.
A development permit had already been filed.
The land could be seized under a redevelopment clause if the trust were challenged.
We had forty-eight days.
If the trust remained under Robert’s control, Ryan could trigger the challenge.
We had to remove him first.
The court hearing was scheduled for two weeks later.
Meanwhile, Ryan became more aggressive.
He followed Claire’s car.
Sent flowers to her office.
Left toys for Lily.
One morning, he stood outside the café.
I walked out.
“You need to leave.”
Ryan smiled.
“I just want to talk.”
“You’re done talking.”
“She loves me.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“She’ll come back.”
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I listen to her.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“You think you’re special because she likes you?”
“I don’t.”
“You’re playing hero.”
“No.”
I pointed toward the café.
“I’m protecting my family.”
Ryan laughed.
“Your family?”
He shook his head.
“You’ve known her for months.”
“Long enough.”
He whispered,
“You don’t know what she is.”
I stared.
“What is she?”
Ryan smiled.
“A woman carrying a secret that will destroy you.”
He walked away.
I hated that phrase.
Because it worked.
For the next few days, I couldn’t stop wondering what he meant.
Then Claire came to me.
“There is something I haven’t told you.”
I looked at her.
“I know.”
She sighed.
“I’m pregnant.”
I froze.
“What?”
She touched her stomach.
“Three months.”
I stared.
“Ryan’s?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Then whose?”
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know until recently.”
My mind raced.
Then she whispered,
“Yours.”
I stopped breathing.
“How?”
She cried.
“I was going to tell you.”
I sat down.
She had been pregnant before the night she first sat at my table.
She had not known yet.
That night, after we first met, she had taken a test.
It was positive.
She hadn’t told me because she didn’t know whether she could trust me.
I looked at her.
“You’ve been carrying this alone?”
She nodded.
“Why?”
“Because I was scared.”
I stood.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
I took her hands.
“I’m not angry.”
She cried.
“What are you?”
I smiled through my own tears.
“Terrified.”
She laughed.
Then I pulled her into my arms.
“And happy.”
