Ethan read the documents in silence.
His face became increasingly pale.
“My father knew?”
Sophie nodded.
“Apparently.”
“And Amelia’s father discovered the transfers?”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Amelia.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“Your father ordered everyone to stay silent.”
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan noticed a signature.
He froze.
“Richard Langford.”
Victoria’s father.
Amelia stared.
“That’s her father?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophie whispered:
“Then maybe the marriage wasn’t designed to merge the companies.”
Ethan looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe it was designed to control the evidence.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
He immediately called his attorney.
“Pull every financial record from twenty years ago.”
The attorney hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore…”
“Everything.”
“I’ll need authorization.”
“You have it.”
He hung up.
Then he looked at Amelia.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For your father.”
“You didn’t do anything.”
“My family might have.”
She looked away.
“I need to know what happened.”
“I’ll help you.”
She hesitated.
“You have a wedding to finish.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“I think we have bigger problems.”
Later that evening, Ethan confronted Richard Langford.
“You knew about the transfers.”
Richard didn’t blink.
“I know about many things.”
“My father knew.”
“Your father knew nothing.”
“Then why did he keep records?”
Richard’s expression changed.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What happened to Amelia’s father?”
Richard remained silent.
That silence was enough.
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Did you hurt him?”
“No.”
“Did you order someone to?”
Richard looked away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ethan walked out.
Victoria followed.
“My father isn’t telling you everything.”
“I know.”
“He never tells anyone everything.”
“Why did you marry me?”
Victoria stared at him.
“Because I thought I could control the situation.”
“And now?”
“Now I think we were both trapped.”
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
Amelia stood there.
Victoria noticed.
She sighed.
“Go.”
“What?”
“Go talk to her.”
Ethan looked surprised.
Victoria smiled sadly.
“I don’t think I was ever supposed to be your wife.”
She walked away.
Ethan approached Amelia.
“She knows.”
“What?”
“She knows this marriage was never about love.”
Amelia looked at him.
“Then what happens now?”
He smiled.
“We find the truth.”
