The intruder stepped into the room.
He wore a dark jacket and mask.
Ethan moved forward.
“Who are you?”
The man raised a weapon.
Sophie pulled Amelia behind a cabinet.
“Give me the laptop.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You’re too late.”
The man hesitated.
Ethan threw the laptop across the room.
The intruder turned.
Sophie grabbed Amelia and ran.
They escaped through a side door.
Outside, rain poured.
They reached the car.
Ethan joined them seconds later.
They drove away.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Amelia whispered:
“Who was he?”
“I don’t know.”
Sophie looked at Ethan.
“Your father must have known this would happen.”
Ethan stared ahead.
“Then he knew he might die.”
Amelia looked at him.
“Do you think his death was connected?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
They returned to the hotel.
Victoria was waiting.
She looked terrified.
“Where were you?”
Ethan closed the door.
“We found evidence.”
Victoria looked at Amelia.
“What kind?”
“Evidence against your father.”
Victoria’s face went pale.
“I knew it.”
“You knew?”
“I knew he was hiding something.”
She sat down.
“My father told me the marriage would protect our family.”
Ethan frowned.
“Protect from what?”
“From prison.”
Silence.
Victoria continued.
“He said your father had proof.”
Amelia stared.
“Where is it?”
Victoria shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she pulled a small key from her purse.
“But he gave me this.”
Ethan took it.
“What’s it for?”
“An office.”
“Whose?”
“My father’s.”
They exchanged glances.
Victoria looked at Amelia.
“Your father wasn’t the only one trying to expose him.”
Amelia swallowed.
“What do you mean?”
“Your father had an ally.”
“Who?”
Victoria whispered:
“Daniel Whitmore.”
Ethan looked stunned.
His father had not betrayed Amelia’s father.
