The truth became stranger the following morning.
The wedding reception had ended.
But the marriage had not been finalized legally.
A missing document had delayed the official registration.
Ethan was furious.
Victoria’s father was furious.
The lawyers were frantic.
Amelia was preparing to leave the hotel when Sophie stopped her.
“You need to see something.”
“What?”
Sophie handed her a folder.
Inside were old financial records.
Amelia recognized her father’s name.
She stared.
“What is this?”
“Your father worked for ours.”
“I know.”
“He wasn’t just an employee.”
Amelia continued reading.
“He was a financial auditor.”
Sophie nodded.
“He discovered something.”
“What?”
“Money was being moved out of Whitmore Industries.”
Amelia’s heart raced.
“By whom?”
Sophie shook her head.
“We don’t know.”
She pointed to a document.
“Your father discovered it twenty years ago.”
Amelia read the date.
Twenty years.
That was when she and Ethan had been children.
“My father died two years later.”
Sophie nodded.
“He was investigating the company until the end.”
Amelia looked up.
“Was his death an accident?”
Sophie hesitated.
“We don’t know.”
A cold feeling spread through Amelia.
“What does this have to do with Ethan’s wedding?”
Sophie answered:
“The Langfords know about the missing money.”
“And Ethan?”
“He doesn’t.”
Amelia closed the folder.
“Why are you telling me?”
“Because someone has been watching you.”
Amelia froze.
“Who?”
Sophie pointed toward the parking lot.
A black SUV was parked outside.
Someone sat inside.
Amelia’s heart began pounding.
“Who is that?”
“I don’t know.”
Then the SUV drove away.
Sophie grabbed Amelia’s arm.
“You can’t go home alone.”
Amelia looked at her.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying your father’s investigation may never have ended.”
Before they could continue, Ethan appeared.
“What’s going on?”
Sophie looked at him.
“Tell him.”
Amelia shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Ethan frowned.
“Tell me what?”
Amelia looked into his eyes.
For the first time, she saw something different.
Not the billionaire.
Not the groom.
The boy she had known.
The boy who had once promised to protect her.
And she realized she might need him again.
