The Billionaire in the Orange Vest

Chapter 1

At 5:42 on a rainy Tuesday morning, Nurse Clara Bennett was arguing with a man in a muddy orange construction vest.

“Sir, you can’t come through this entrance.”

The man stopped beneath the hospital awning.

“I work here.”

Clara glanced at his boots, his scratched hard hat, and the reflective vest hanging loosely over a faded shirt.

“Then you should know this entrance is closed to construction crews before six.”

He looked toward the unfinished wing behind the hospital.

“I’m not with the construction crew.”

“Then why are you dressed like one?”

The man looked down at himself.

“I was told this was less conspicuous.”

Clara sighed.

“Whoever told you that lied.”

The man almost smiled.

He was about thirty-five, perhaps thirty-six, with dark hair damp from the rain and an expensive-looking watch mostly hidden beneath his sleeve.

Clara noticed none of that.

She had been working twelve-hour shifts for three years and had learned to judge people by what they needed, not what they wore.

“Where are you going?”

“Third floor.”

“That’s the wrong elevator.”

“Why?”

“Because the third floor is closed.”

“Not according to the plans.”

Clara stared at him.

“What plans?”

He hesitated.

“The renovation plans.”

She crossed her arms.

“You really are with construction.”

“No.”

“Maintenance?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly are you doing here?”

The man looked at her for several seconds.

“I’m checking something.”

“At five forty-two in the morning?”

“Yes.”

“Without an ID?”

He reached into his pocket.

Clara expected an employee badge.

Instead, he pulled out a keycard.

She looked at it.

No name.

Just a black strip and a small silver emblem.

“That’s not a hospital badge.”

“I know.”

“Then you can’t enter.”

He looked surprisingly amused.

“You’re serious.”

“Very.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

He stepped away.

Clara thought the problem was over.

Then the hospital director came running through the lobby.

“Mr. Vale!”

Clara froze.

The man in the orange vest turned around.

The director nearly collided with him.

“Sir, I’m so sorry. We weren’t expecting you until seven.”

“It’s fine.”

The director looked toward Clara.

“She stopped you?”

“She did.”

The director’s face went pale.

“Ma’am, this is Adrian Vale.”

Clara stared.

She knew that name.

Everyone in the city knew it.

Adrian Vale owned ValeCare Medical Group, the company that had recently acquired St. Anne’s Hospital.

He wasn’t a construction worker.

He wasn’t maintenance.

He wasn’t even an employee.

He was the owner.

Clara felt her face heat.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t recognize you.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Good.”

She blinked.

“Good?”

“People who recognize me usually stop behaving normally.”

The director laughed nervously.

Clara didn’t.

She looked at the unfinished wing.

“Then why are you dressed like that?”

Adrian glanced down.

“Because I wanted to see the hospital without everyone preparing for my arrival.”

Clara raised an eyebrow.

“And?”

“And you’re the first person who told me no.”

Before she could respond, a nurse called her name from the emergency department.

“Clara! We need you!”

She turned.

“I have to go.”

Adrian nodded.

She hurried away.

The director watched her disappear.

“Sir, that’s Nurse Bennett.”

“Who is she?”

“One of our best.”

Adrian looked toward the emergency department.

“Interesting.”

He had come to the hospital to investigate a construction problem.

Instead, he had met the only employee who had treated him like an ordinary man.

And he had no idea that Clara was about to uncover a problem far more serious than a delayed renovation.
