She Bought Her Father’s Tool Chest Back for $12 — Then One Drawer Refused to Open
Chapter 12
Thomas returned to Bellmere permanently.
At first, the villagers did not know what to say.
Some remembered him as the craftsman who disappeared.
Others remembered the rumors.
A few apologized.
Thomas accepted some.
Others he did not.
He reopened the old workshop.
Clara helped him.
The tool chest sat in its usual place.
Every morning, Thomas opened it.
Every evening, he closed it.
Except the bottom drawer.
That remained open.
One day, Clara asked:
“Why did you build it that way?”
“To teach you something.”
“What?”
“That locked things aren’t always meant to stay locked.”
She smiled.
“You could have told me that without making me chase clues across the county.”
Thomas laughed.
“Where would be the fun in that?”
Margaret came to the workshop.
She and Thomas stood facing each other.
Neither spoke.
Then Margaret slapped him.
Clara gasped.
Thomas rubbed his cheek.
“I deserved that.”
Margaret hit him again.
“That one was for Clara.”
Thomas nodded.
“Fair.”
She started crying.
He embraced her.
After fifteen years, the family was together.
Not unchanged.
Not healed completely.
But together.
