THE BILLIONAIRE TRIED TO FIRE HER—THEN DISCOVERED HER SHOCKING SECRET

Chapter 1

Adrian Blackwell had fired people for less.

That was what his executives whispered about him.

At thirty-nine, Adrian was the billionaire founder and CEO of Blackwell Holdings, a global investment empire that owned hotels, technology companies, luxury properties, and three major manufacturing firms.

He was known for making decisions quickly.

No hesitation.

No second chances.

No emotional attachments.

Especially at work.

That Monday morning, he walked into the executive conference room ten minutes early and found the usual group waiting for him.

Everyone stood.

Everyone except one woman.

She was seated near the far end of the table, reading through a thick financial report.

Adrian stopped.

“Who is that?”

His chief of staff leaned toward him.

“Emma Carter. Senior financial analyst.”

Adrian frowned.

“She wasn’t invited to this meeting.”

“She was asked to prepare the quarterly risk report.”

“Then she should be in the back.”

Emma looked up.

She had dark blonde hair tied into a low ponytail and wore a simple navy suit that didn’t look expensive.

Unlike everyone else in the room, she didn’t appear nervous.

“Good morning, Mr. Blackwell.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You’re comfortable.”

“I try to be.”

A few executives exchanged nervous glances.

Adrian sat down.

The quarterly meeting began.

Profits were up.

Revenue was up.

But Adrian wasn’t interested in good news.

“Show me the problem.”

Emma looked down at her report.

“There are three.”

The room went quiet.

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“Go on.”

“Our Phoenix division is reporting profits that don’t match cash movement.”

A CFO interrupted.

“That’s a timing issue.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Continue.”

She opened a spreadsheet.

“There’s a recurring transfer between four subsidiaries.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know yet.”

The CFO spoke again.

“Those are routine internal reallocations.”

Emma turned toward him.

“Then why are the amounts identical on the same dates every month?”

Silence.

Adrian looked at the screen.

The pattern was obvious.

Even he had missed it.

“Who authorized these?”

Emma scrolled.

“Executive finance.”

The CFO shifted in his seat.

Adrian leaned forward.

“And you think it’s fraud?”

“I think someone is moving money in a way that doesn’t make operational sense.”

“That’s not an accusation.”

“No.”

Emma met his eyes.

“It’s a warning.”

Adrian studied her.

He didn’t like warnings.

He liked certainty.

“Finish your report by five.”

Emma nodded.

He continued the meeting.

Two hours later, Adrian received a call.

His CFO had requested an urgent private meeting.

“She’s overstepping,” the CFO said.

“Who?”

“Emma Carter.”

Adrian frowned.

“She challenged your report.”

“She challenged everyone.”

“Maybe you were wrong.”

The CFO looked offended.

“She isn’t qualified to question executive finance.”

Adrian remembered Emma’s confidence.

He made a decision.

“Bring her to my office.”

Ten minutes later, Emma stood across from his desk.

Adrian didn’t offer her a seat.

“You embarrassed a senior executive in front of the board.”

Emma remained calm.

“I presented numbers.”

“You accused him of manipulating transfers.”

“I did not.”

“You implied it.”

“I identified irregularities.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You seem very confident for someone who has worked here seven months.”

Emma looked directly at him.

“I’ve worked in financial analysis for eleven years.”

“Not here.”

“No.”

“And you seem to have forgotten something.”

“What?”

“I’m the CEO.”

Emma nodded.

“I know.”

“Then remember your position.”

“I know that too.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

He opened her employee file.

“Your performance evaluations are excellent.”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been late twice.”

“Because my daughter had medical appointments.”

Adrian paused.

“You have a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Age?”

“Eight.”

He looked back at the report.

“Then perhaps you need a job with fewer responsibilities.”

Emma understood immediately.

“You’re firing me?”

Adrian closed the file.

“Effective immediately.”

Emma didn’t plead.

Didn’t cry.

Didn’t argue.

She simply picked up her folder.

Before she left, she turned back.

“One thing.”

Adrian looked up.

“If you fire me, at least make sure you understand what I found.”

He frowned.

“What did you find?”

Emma’s expression changed.

“The missing money isn’t in Phoenix.”

“Where is it?”

She held his gaze.

“Closer to you than you think.”

Then she walked out.

Adrian sat silently.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t sure whether he’d just fired an employee…

or removed the only person who knew the truth.
