She Bought Her Father’s Tool Chest Back for $12 — Then One Drawer Refused to Open
Chapter 11
“You,” Edward said.
Clara smiled.
“Good afternoon.”
Edward looked at Thomas.
For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
“You’re alive.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Yes.”
The hearing began.
Farmers testified.
Records were presented.
Forged signatures were compared.
Payment ledgers were read aloud.
Edward tried to dismiss everything.
“These documents are old.”
The sheriff answered:
“The crimes may be old. The land is still stolen.”
Edward turned toward Clara.
“You have no understanding of business.”
Clara placed her father’s ledger on the table.
“My father did.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“He understood what you did.”
Edward laughed.
“Your father was a mechanic.”
Thomas smiled.
“A mechanic who found the hidden compartment in your carriage.”
The room went silent.
Edward’s face collapsed.
The sheriff ordered his arrest.
But the hearing did not end there.
The evidence exposed a network.
Several properties were returned.
Families received compensation.
Officials were removed.
Merchants were forced to repay stolen money.
Jonathan Bennett testified.
He admitted his role.
Clara watched him.
He looked smaller than she remembered.
When the hearing ended, Jonathan approached her.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Clara studied him.
“You betrayed my father.”
“Yes.”
“You were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“So was my mother.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Clara thought for a long time.
“Not today.”
He nodded.
“That is fair.”
“But perhaps one day.”
Jonathan began to cry.
It was not a perfect ending.
It was an honest one.
