My Wife Told Everyone I Was ‘Just a Driver’ — Then I Found Out Her Secret Too.

Chapter 1

The first time Daniel Brooks heard his wife call him “just a driver,” he was standing three feet away.

She didn’t know he could hear her.

They were at a charity dinner held inside one of the city’s most expensive hotels.

Daniel had spent the entire afternoon driving Claire to meetings, picking up her dress, collecting her younger sister from the airport, and making sure she arrived on time.

He had never minded.

That was what a husband did.

At least, that was what he believed.

Daniel was thirty-seven and had been married to Claire for six years.

To the outside world, Claire was a successful executive.

Confident.

Elegant.

Ambitious.

She worked for a powerful investment company and was constantly surrounded by wealthy clients.

Daniel had once worked in finance too.

Then their daughter, Sophie, had been born.

Claire returned to work within three months.

Daniel didn’t.

Sophie had medical problems during her first year, and Daniel became the parent who stayed home, attended appointments, cooked dinner, handled school forms, and later took whatever jobs allowed him to stay available.

Driving eventually became his main income.

He drove for private clients.

Airport transfers.

Corporate executives.

Hotel guests.

He didn’t love the job.

But it paid the bills.

And he loved being there for Sophie.

Tonight, he had driven Claire to the charity dinner.

She had told him not to wait outside.

So he entered through the rear service entrance and walked around to the ballroom.

He wasn’t wearing a tuxedo.

He had on a dark suit he’d bought secondhand.

He found Claire near a table surrounded by executives.

One of the men asked,

“How did you get here?”

Claire laughed.

“My husband drove me.”

The group chuckled.

Another woman asked,

“Daniel still drives?”

Claire smiled.

“That’s basically what he does.”

A man raised his eyebrows.

“So he’s a driver?”

Claire shrugged.

“Yeah. Just a driver.”

Daniel stopped walking.

Something inside him went completely still.

Claire continued talking.

“He likes simple things. He’s never been interested in business.”

That part wasn’t true.

Not even close.

Daniel had a degree in financial management.

He had spent eight years working for a major investment firm.

And he’d once helped structure a $400 million acquisition.

But he had stopped talking about his career after Claire began making jokes about his decision to stay home with Sophie.

He had told himself it didn’t matter.

Now it did.

He turned around.

No one saw him leave.

Outside, the rain had begun.

He stood beneath the hotel awning and stared at the traffic.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Sophie.

Daddy, are you coming home soon?

He smiled sadly.

Soon, sweetheart.

Then another message appeared.

From an unknown number.

You should ask your wife why she has been meeting him every Thursday night.

Daniel frowned.

He opened the attached photograph.

Claire.

Standing beside a man Daniel had never seen before.

The two were outside a private club.

Claire was holding the man’s arm.

Daniel stared at the picture.

Then another image arrived.

A hotel room key.

Room 1807.

And one final message:

Your wife isn’t hiding just one secret.

Daniel’s hands went cold.

He had spent six years believing he knew exactly who Claire was.

Suddenly, he wasn’t sure he knew her at all.
