She Bought Her Father’s Tool Chest Back for $12 — Then One Drawer Refused to Open
Chapter 8
Clara was furious.
“You mean he left us?”
“No.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“He disappeared because he was protecting you.”
“From whom?”
“From the men behind the fraud.”
Jonathan explained that Thomas had discovered evidence of illegal land seizures throughout the county.
If he went to the authorities, he would be killed.
So he created the tool chest.
He placed clues inside it.
Then he arranged for it to eventually reach Clara.
He knew she would remember the star.
He knew she would open the hidden drawer.
He had built a trail she could follow only when she was old enough.
Clara sat on the workbench.
“He planned all of this?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he come home?”
Jonathan looked away.
“Because someone close to him betrayed his location.”
“Who?”
Jonathan did not answer.
Clara realized.
“You.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I gave them the first location.”
She stood.
“You caused his disappearance.”
“I did.”
“You told them where he was.”
“I was afraid.”
Clara wanted to hate him.
But she saw tears in the old man’s eyes.
“What happened after?”
“I tried to warn him.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he now?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Clara looked at the map.
A location was marked outside the county.
A small coastal village.
Her father’s final clue.
They traveled there.
An old innkeeper remembered Thomas.
“He stayed here twelve years ago.”
Clara’s heart stopped.
“Twelve?”
“Yes.”
“Where did he go?”
The innkeeper hesitated.
“North.”
“Why?”
“He was being followed.”
“By whom?”
The old man looked toward the door.
“A gentleman who never gave his name.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“Did my father leave anything?”
The innkeeper nodded.
“A letter.”
He handed it to her.
The envelope bore Clara’s name.
She opened it.
My dear Clara,
If you have reached this place, then the chest has found you.
Clara began to cry.
The next line made her hands shake.
I am alive.
