“Why did Grandfather hide things inside?”

Clara smiled.

“He wanted someone to find them.”

“Why?”

“Was Grandfather brave?”

“Was he scared?”

“Yes.”

The girl looked confused.

“You can be both?”

Clara nodded.

“That is what courage means.”

She opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was only one thing.

Her father’s old brass key.

The same key she had found for twelve dollars.

She placed it in her daughter’s hand.

“Keep this.”

“What does it open?”

Clara smiled.

“Not everything that is locked needs to be opened.”
