My Fiancé Went Back to His First Love—So I Married Her Billionaire Fiancé Instead

Chapter 6

The marriage announcement shocked everyone.

The headlines appeared within hours.

EMILY CARTER TO MARRY BILLIONAIRE ALEXANDER BLACKWELL.

Jacob read the article from his hospital bed.

His expression changed.

Victoria stood beside him.

“She did what?”

Victoria grabbed the phone.

“She married him?”

“Not yet.”

Jacob looked away.

“She moved on.”

Victoria’s voice became cold.

“This is a problem.”

Jacob finally looked at her.

“You did this.”

“I didn’t tell her to marry Alexander.”

“You pushed me away from her.”

“I gave you what you wanted.”

Jacob laughed bitterly.

“No.”

“What?”

“You gave me what I thought I wanted.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You’re confused.”

“No.”

Jacob stood.

“You used me.”

Victoria stepped back.

Jacob continued.

“You knew about the trust.”

She said nothing.

“You knew about Emily’s inheritance.”

Still nothing.

“You never came back because you loved me.”

Victoria smiled coldly.

“You finally understand.”

Jacob felt sick.

“I hate you.”

Victoria’s expression didn’t change.

“You’ll get over it.”

She left the room.

Meanwhile, Emily and Alexander prepared for a very different wedding.

There would be no huge ceremony.

No romantic spectacle.

It was a legal arrangement.

At least, that was what Emily told herself.

Yet something strange happened during the preparations.

Alexander remembered small things.

Her favorite coffee.

The books she liked.

The fact that she hated lilies.

The way she tapped her fingers when nervous.

Emily began noticing him too.

He didn’t care about appearances.

He always asked before making decisions.

He never treated her like a fragile woman.

And he listened.

One night, they had dinner in his apartment.

Emily looked around.

“You live alone?”

“Yes.”

“No staff?”

“Very little.”

“Why?”

“I don’t like people in my space.”

She smiled.

“Then this must be torture.”

“A little.”

She laughed.

Alexander smiled.

Emily realized she had never seen him laugh before.

He looked younger.

Less guarded.

“Why did you agree to this?” she asked.

He looked at her.

“To protect my company.”

“Only that?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

Emily waited.

“You’re different.”

“Different how?”

“You’re the first person I’ve met in years who isn’t impressed by my money.”

She smiled.

“I’m impressed by the view.”

He laughed.

Then the mood changed.

Alexander leaned forward.

“Emily.”

“Yes?”

“You don’t have to marry me.”

She froze.

“What?”

“I meant what I said. If you don’t want this, I’ll still protect you.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because I don’t want you hurt.”

Her heart moved slightly.

“You barely know me.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He answered simply.

“Because you deserve better than what happened.”

Emily looked away.

That night, she couldn’t sleep.

She realized the marriage was no longer just a plan.

She was beginning to trust him.

The wedding took place two weeks later.

Only twelve people attended.

No cameras.

No press.

Emily wore a simple white dress.

Alexander wore a black suit.

When they exchanged vows, neither said anything romantic.

They promised honesty.

Respect.

Freedom.

Partnership.

Afterward, Emily slipped the ring onto her finger.

Alexander did the same.

They looked at each other.

“It feels strange,” she whispered.

“What?”

“Being married.”

He smiled.

“It does.”

They kissed.

Only once.

Briefly.

But neither looked away afterward.

Outside, reporters waited.

Inside, two people who had been betrayed by the same two people had just made a promise.

Neither knew whether it would last.

But both secretly hoped it would.
