My Fiancé Went Back to His First Love—So I Married Her Billionaire Fiancé Instead
Chapter 4
The Blackwell family vault was inside a private building beneath Blackwell Tower.
Only four people had access.
Alexander.
His father.
His sister.
And one external trustee.
Now someone had entered it.
Nothing obvious was missing.
No cash.
No jewelry.
No documents.
But Alexander immediately knew what they were looking for.
“The blue ledger.”
Emily followed him into the secure archive.
“What is it?”
“A financial record.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
He opened a steel cabinet.
The compartment was empty.
Emily looked at him.
“They stole it.”
Alexander nodded.
“What does it contain?”
“Thirty years of family transactions.”
“Illegal ones?”
“Some.”
“By your family?”
“Yes.”
Emily stared.
“You’re telling me your family has secrets too.”
“All wealthy families do.”
“That doesn’t make me feel better.”
“It shouldn’t.”
Alexander closed the cabinet.
“Someone is trying to use the ledger against me.”
“Victoria?”
“Maybe.”
“What about Jacob?”
Alexander didn’t answer.
Emily understood.
“You think Jacob helped.”
“I think he had access.”
“To your vault?”
“No.”
Alexander looked at her.
“To someone who did.”
Emily thought.
“The trustee?”
“Exactly.”
Later that evening, Emily received a message from Jacob.
I need to see you.
She replied:
Where?
He sent an address.
A small hotel.
Emily hesitated.
Then she went.
Jacob was waiting in a private room.
His face looked frightened.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“Neither should you.”
He closed the door.
“Victoria is using me.”
Emily’s heart skipped.
“What?”
“She knows I helped her.”
“Helped her do what?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“Jacob.”
He rubbed his face.
“She told me if I didn’t cooperate, she’d expose something.”
“What?”
“A mistake I made at work.”
Emily stared.
“What kind of mistake?”
“Money.”
Her heart sank.
“Did you steal?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I moved funds.”
“For Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she said it was temporary.”
Emily looked at him.
“You betrayed me.”
“I know.”
“And now you want forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because I want you safe.”
She froze.
“Safe from what?”
Jacob stepped closer.
“She isn’t who you think she is.”
Emily stared.
“Neither are you.”
He nodded.
“I deserve that.”
Then someone knocked on the door.
Jacob froze.
“Who is it?”
No answer.
He looked at Emily.
“Go.”
She didn’t move.
“Emily, now.”
The door suddenly opened.
Two men entered.
Jacob shoved Emily behind him.
“What are you doing here?”
One man punched Jacob.
Emily screamed.
The second man grabbed her arm.
Then the door crashed open again.
Alexander entered with security.
The men ran.
Alexander caught one.
The other escaped.
Emily ran toward Jacob.
He was bleeding.
Alexander knelt beside him.
“Can you stand?”
Jacob nodded.
Then he looked at Emily.
“She wants the merger.”
“What merger?”
Jacob whispered:
“Blackwell-Sinclair.”
Alexander froze.
Victoria’s family was attempting to merge with Alexander’s company.
“But why?”
Jacob closed his eyes.
“Because the merger gives them control.”
Alexander understood.
“Control of what?”
“The trust.”
Emily looked between them.
“What trust?”
Alexander said nothing.
Jacob did.
“Your family trust.”
Emily frowned.
“My family?”
Jacob looked at her.
“Your father left you something.”
Emily felt dizzy.
“What?”
Jacob whispered:
“Twenty million dollars.”
Alexander stared at him.
Emily was silent.
She had never known.
The money had been locked behind legal conditions.
And suddenly, Victoria’s interest in Jacob made sense.
Emily had inherited a fortune.
She just hadn’t known it.
And Victoria did.
