They Humiliated the Poor Cleaner… Until the CEO Walked In

Chapter 4

The investigation began quietly.

Ethan didn’t tell the board.

He didn’t tell the police.

He didn’t tell the hotel manager.

Only Clara and one lawyer he trusted knew about the USB drive.

The lawyer’s name was Daniel Reed.

He had worked for Halston International for nineteen years.

Daniel examined the transactions and found something disturbing.

“They weren’t random,” he said.

“They formed a chain.”

Ethan frowned.

“What kind of chain?”

“Money moved from Halston to shell companies, then into private accounts.”

Clara leaned forward.

“And then?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then someone used the money to buy properties.”

“Which properties?”

Daniel pulled up a map.

Clara stared.

Every property was connected to one place.

A small coastal town.

“That’s where my father grew up.”

Ethan looked at the map.

“What’s the address?”

Clara whispered it.

Daniel searched.

“There’s a private clinic there.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“My mother used to work there.”

Ethan stood.

“We’re going.”

They left that afternoon.

The drive took four hours.

Clara spent most of it staring through the window.

Ethan drove.

The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was simply heavy.

Eventually Clara asked,

“Why do you remember me?”

Ethan didn’t look at her.

“Because I knew something was wrong.”

“Back then?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you help us?”

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Because I was young.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

He sighed.

“I was afraid of my father.”

Clara looked at him.

“He was powerful.”

“So was mine.”

“My father wasn’t the kind of man you say no to.”

“Neither was mine.”

Ethan glanced at her.

“You don’t know how sorry I am.”

Clara looked away.

“I didn’t come here for an apology.”

“I know.”

“I came for the truth.”

“We’ll find it.”

The clinic had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered the windows.

Inside, they found old records.

Most were destroyed.

But one storage cabinet was locked.

Ethan forced it open.

Inside was a medical file.

Michael Bennett.

Clara froze.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

He had been admitted under another name.

His condition was listed as severe.

He had survived a gunshot wound.

The date was three months after his disappearance.

Clara covered her mouth.

“My father was alive.”

Ethan read the last page.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

He pointed.

“Look at the attending physician.”

Clara read the name.

Dr. Nathan Blake.

She knew it.

The doctor’s son was the current chief financial officer of Halston International.

Clara stared at Ethan.

“This is all connected.”

Before Ethan could respond, headlights appeared outside.

Someone had followed them.

The clinic doors slammed open.

Three men entered.

One raised a gun.

“Ethan Cole.”

Clara stepped backward.

The man pointed toward the files.

“Give us everything.”

Ethan moved in front of Clara.

“You’ll have to come get it.”

The gunman smiled.

“Gladly.”

Then the lights went out.
