They Humiliated the Poor Cleaner… Until the CEO Walked In

Chapter 14

Two months later, Ethan proposed.

Not at a luxury restaurant.

Not on a yacht.

Not in front of investors.

He took Clara back to the hotel where they had first met again.

The same ballroom.

The same marble floor.

The same crystal chandeliers.

He had asked the manager to empty the room.

Clara walked in.

“What are we doing here?”

Ethan stood in the center.

“Remember the night you were humiliated?”

She looked around.

“I remember.”

“The night I walked in?”

She nodded.

He smiled.

“I’ve thought about it a thousand times.”

“You probably wish you’d arrived five minutes earlier.”

“I wish I’d arrived five minutes earlier every day for twelve years.”

Clara’s eyes softened.

He walked toward her.

“That night, everyone saw a poor cleaner.”

He reached for her hands.

“I saw the girl I remembered.”

Clara smiled.

“And I saw the man who had the courage to finally stand beside me.”

Ethan took out a ring.

“No investors.”

“No board.”

“No cameras.”

“No family pressure.”

He knelt.

“Just me.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“Clara Bennett, will you marry me?”

She laughed through tears.

“You already know the answer.”

“I want to hear it.”

“Yes.”

He stood.

She hugged him.

Then she whispered,

“You know what I remember most about that night?”

“What?”

“The champagne.”

He laughed.

“Seriously?”

“No.”

She kissed him.

“I remember you saying I was a person.”

His smile faded slightly.

“I meant it.”

“I know.”

She touched his face.

“That’s why I stayed.”

Outside the ballroom, employees were waiting.

When Clara and Ethan walked out, everyone applauded.

James, the young cleaner, was among them.

He held a small bouquet of flowers.

Clara laughed.

She accepted them.

“Thank you.”

James smiled.

Then Ethan whispered,

“Do you know what your father told me?”

“What?”

“He said the best kind of inheritance isn’t money.”

Clara looked at him.

“Then what is it?”

“Someone who teaches you what kind of person to become.”

She smiled.

“He was right.”
